The Singelloop ('singel' = town canal, 'loop' = run) around Utrecht is the oldest road race in the Netherlands and has a rich history. In 1925 this race was organised for the first time: there were 37 runners, thousands of people were watching along the 'Singels' (town canals). Important goal of both main sponsor Fortis Bank Nederland and the Organisation is not only to restore this run in 'old glory', but also to develop it to an international top race.
The feeling of this 10K race and the atmosphere of the past will revive on the current posters and flyers. In its very early days the athletes had a cup of tea and a tin of Ovomaltine after the finish. Maybe this tradition will be restored one day. However, another gift they used to get, a pack of cigarettes (!), certainly not.
