Foundation Twin Towns Utrecht-León

The Foundation Vriendschapsband Utrecht-León has been helping the residents of León since 1983. León is twin town of Utrecht, located in Nicaragua (Central America).

All children to school!

To achieve this goal the Foundation Vriendschapsband Utrecht-León has started a campaign: “ All children to school in León”. This campaign will run until 2011. The friendship is organising several activities to draw attention to the campaign and to rais Money for education in León.

Education plays an important role in Utrecht. Good accomodations, quality and the role of school in the neighborhood are all important for education. It is important in León too, but there it is far behind Utrecht. In 2009 over 7,000 children between 5 and 12 years old in León did not attend school or finish education. Many children need to work to contribute to the family income. Girls often need to stay home to help running the household. There is a lack of schools, teachers and books. The schools are often far away and transport is expensive.

The Foundation wishes to raise at least € 20,000 in 2010. This money will be used for:

• restore and build class rooms;
• school benches;
• school equipment (uniforms, shoes, writing materials);
• school meals;
• further education of teachers;
• awareness with parents;
• programmes for working children.
